Frequently Asked Questions about Online Services
Online Services have been provided by SkillTRAN and its predecessor companies since 1982! We were pioneers then and we continue to innovate. We are reinventing ourselves once again, so visit us often to see what we are up to next!
1. I'm an existing PC software customer .... How can I begin to use some of the features of the online service?
The easiest way is to complete thet Online Services Signup Form. SkillTRAN will set up your account and email additional instructions to you. There is no charge to sign up for services and no monthly minimum. You are invoiced only for the services you actually request, and only when you need them.
2. I use another job matching system .... how will this help me?
This new web-based service for employer listings will enable you to quickly and reliably get your research done so that you can do a labor market survey or sponsor a highly targetted job search. These employer listings are categorized by NAICS industry, so you can quickly get a picture of a local labor market anywhere in the country without an excessive number of phone calls. You can pinpoint exactly the size of business you need (number of employees) in the target geographic area, and you'll even get a contact name and title with most of the employer listings, further expediting your survey/search. Other systems do not have this kind of data at all. You can have a customized list of employers like this sample report in just a few minutes ... compared to 2-3 hours of painful manual research time.
3. So how does this Online Service work?
When you need to do a Transferable Skills Analysis, Pre-Injury/Post-Injury Analysis (PREPOST) or Career Consulting Report (CCS), you interact first with the Report Generator server. The interaction is all character-based, meaning no mouse clicks. You will do these steps to:
- Enter the work history (if any)
- Adjust the worker profile for post-injury residual factors
- Search for occupations
- Explore/Record those search results.
When you are finished building the report, you request that the report be transferred to the Report Retriever server. In PPS, it is Option # 10 on the main menu. Choose this option, then follow the easy instructions to trigger the transfer. In the other online services (PREPOST and CCS), the report is transferred "behind the scenes" to the second server for Report Retrieval.
After about 5-10 minutes, you login to the Report Retriever server, select your client name, click the "Report Retrieval" link, and then save the report directly on your computer. But this server can do lots more than just download the report!
To get to the built-in Labor Market Information (LMI) in Report Retriever, use an Internet Explorer browser to select your client name, add a little bit more to the Client Information section (i.e. Client address, city, state, zip), then click the Occupations button. The occupations entered and found in the Report Generator show up in the Report Retriever system. Click the checkbox for each occupation for which you need labor market data and continue processing per the instructions. This system is all web-based, so you can use your mouse to select and navigate from one section to the next. Look for the red circle in it. Click it to get help for that screen.
The Report Retriever has lots of great additional information, including:
- Wage Data by OES Group - National, Statewide, and Regional
- Employment Number by OES Group - National, Statewide, and Regional
- Long Term Employment Projections (Outlook) - National Only
- Employer Lists (10 or more employees) - All industries - Anywhere, USA for Job Search and Labor Market Sampling
- Real Job Openings - Direct link to Simply Hired, augmented by the O*NET code for refined searches
The Report Retriever server uses newer web-based technology and your familiar browser to minimize your learning curve. The data you enter is remembered right away. If you happen to lose your internet connection, you can log back in and continue processing the case, with little or no data loss! Extensive online help is always available. Report Finder pops up your report in a web browser window ... you can even print it right from the browser window. DOT occupations are cross-referenced to O*NET codes. You can hover over an occupational label to see a brief definition. Click it to get a full description. Sort the list of occupations different ways. Define a labor market by ZIP code, Radius around a ZIP code, City Name, County, MSA, State, Region, or Nationally. Set a minimum and a maximum size to the number of employees at a potential employer. Search by the NAICS industry codes. Click a MapQuest link on the report to show a map of the employer location. If you saved the client's address as part of the client demographics, Mapquest will plot the travel route from the client's home to potential employer's location and estimate the travel time!
4. How hard is this to learn and to use?
Click buttons and links to navigate to different areas of the site. Help is available for every screen. Just click the special Help icon. Our goal is to make this as simple as possible so you can focus on what you need to get for your case. Your comments and critique will continue to guide our development efforts. Your comments will reflect our progress in achieving that goal. Click here to submit suggestions. Explore the Support area of this web site to get lots of additional information and useful forms to prepare for using our services.
5. What is HTML and why are reports sent in this format?
HTML is hypertext markup language, the stuff of which web pages are constructed. HTML enables nice fonts and control over how data is displayed on the screen. It flows nicely when the browser window is re-sized, and it prints up well. It has hyperlinks, so you can click the MapQuest icon and get a map of the employer's location, or click the "Job Exists" link to see which occupation(s) are more likely to be found at that employer. You can also click the NAICS code link to learn lots more about this industry coding system. HTML reports can be opened in all modern word processors. Sections of the HTML reports can be highlighted, copied, and pasted into your word processor, and the special formatting is likely to be preserved, so you will not have to spend time fiddling with fonts to make it "look right".

It can take 5-10 minutes for a report to transfer from one server to the Report Retriever server. Try again in a few minutes. If that does not work, call us at 800-827-2182.
